Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1.Australia is demanding transparency from China in a
proposed international investigation into the origins and spread of COVID-19.
Australia went against WHO’s advice in
early February when it banned travelers arriving from mainland China.
|
2. Malaysia and Vietnam, militarily weaker than China, are
expected to protest through diplomatic channels over a Chinese survey ship
fleet that entered disputed waters this month, inviting a long but nonviolent
standoff.
|
|
3. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said Friday he
absolutely would not think of reducing funding for the World Health Organization
at a time when it is leading the global fight against the COVID-19 virus.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1.Chinese authorities have been under pressure over their
handling of the coronavirus outbreak.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Saturday that China should face
consequences if it was “knowingly responsible" for the pandemic.
However, Australia has now joined calls for an independent
investigation into the origins of COVID-19 and how it spread around the world
with such devastating speed.
|
2. In July last year, the same Chinese energy survey ship
began patrolling near Vanguard Bank 352 kilometers off the coast of
southeastern Vietnam.
|
|
3. President Donald Trump’s decision earlier this week to
temporarily halt U.S. funding for the WHO. Trump alleges there are failures
in the organization’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said politics
should be set aside so they can focus on protecting the health of all people.

Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1. There is relatively low confidence a delayed delivery
of 400,000 protective gowns will arrive on Monday, a senior NHS figure has
said. The consignment had been expected to arrive from Turkey on Sunday.
|
2. India's numbers - 15,712 active cases and 507 deaths -
are relatively low for a country of 1.3 billion. Many believe this is because
it's still testing too little - as of Sunday there had been 386,791. But
scaling up is a challenge. The Indian Council of Medical Research has
approved only one homegrown testing kit so far, imports are delayed because
of a global surge in demand, and the protective gear and medical staff
required to conduct tests are in short supply.
|
|
3. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has signed an order
allowing online marriages, as many weddings are cancelled under lockdown
restrictions.
From now on, people in the US state will be able to apply
for marriage licences remotely and clerks allowed to conduct ceremonies
virtually.
Mr Cuomo joked that the decision meant there was now no
excuse for couples not to tie the knot.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. The delay to the consignment is a real worry, both in
the short and long-term.
It is clear the pandemic stocks we have been largely
relying on to date are running out, at least in terms of gowns and visors.
It has left us depending on international supply -
certainly for gowns - as we do not seem to be able to manufacture them ourselves.
|
2. Economists who spoke to the BBC made a range of
suggestions - including employers chipping in, and insurance covering it -
but all seemed to agree the government should do more.
Already, it is paying for the lion’s share of testing,
however, Mr Dehejia says it should encourage and subsidise free testing.
|
|
3. Doctors Zoe and Tom were thrown a virtual celebration when
their wedding was cancelled. But unless the weddings have been arranged in
advance - and both their venues and officiants are still available despite
lockdown - many of these ceremonies are not legally binding.
New York isn't the first place to turn to the internet to
offer a legal solution.

Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1. Nine people were killed by a
landslide at an illegal gold mine in Sumatra, an Indonesian official said
Sunday. The accident happened Saturday in South Solok in West Sumatra
province when a group of 12 people were digging for gold at an abandoned
mine.
|
2. Besides medical treatment, COVID-19 patients also need
companionship, a nurse at the Sulianti Saroso Infectious Diseases Hospital
said. Nurdiansyah shared his experience treating patients at the COVID-19
referral hospital in a press conference held by the National Disaster
Mitigation Agency on Sunday.
|
|
3. Social media analyst Ismail Fahmi was answering
questions from participants during a Zoom webinar last Thursday when he
noticed something was off. They have prepared several security protocols
though, and we have been trained to follow them since the beginning.
Even lawmakers in Indonesia have used Zoom to host virtual
hearings. Last week, Zoom rolled out measures to prevent Zoombombing and data
hacking, saying it was building systems to detect whether people are trying
out username and password pairings and block them from trying again
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. The location and the rainy weather also hampered rescue
efforts. All victims are accounted for and there's no more missing, Firman
said, adding that police and the local disaster agency are investigating. Illegal
and unlicensed mines are prevalent across mineral-rich Indonesia and the
scene of frequent accidents.
|
2. One nurse currently handles three to four patients, he
said. One patient can take up to one hour for each treatment. He said that
sometimes nurses might even spend three to four hours at a time with a single
patient, because some patients are afraid to be left alone. We have to
motivate patients and strengthen them mentally so that their immune system is
also strengthened.
|
|
3. AFP reported. Improvements to Zoom’s security also
include a toolbar to easily access features such as locking chats from
strangers and making meeting password requirements a default setting as well
as a new measure that allows paid account holders to select which regions
their data is routed through during their sessions.

|
Newsworthy event (Main event)
|
1. The Magetan administration in East Java conducted rapid
tests for COVID-19 at the Temboro Islamic boarding school on Monday,
following a report that dozens of Malaysian students returning from the
school had contracted coronavirus.
|
2. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic,
Harvard University, a private Ivy League research university in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, is offering 67 free online courses for those who want to
expand their knowledge and master new skills during self-quarantine.
|
|
3. Singapore is assessing whether migrant workers who have
recovered from coronavirus might be safer on cruise ships than back in
dormitories that have become infection hotbeds, despite problems controlling
onboard outbreaks encountered elsewhere.
|
|
Background event (Elaboration)
|
1. The new cluster was detected at the Kuala Lumpur
International Airport on April 16, Malaysian Health Ministry health director
general Noor Hisham Abdullah said during a daily press briefing on Sunday. East Java has recorded a total of 555 cases
so far. Indonesia still has a very low testing rate, with only 136 tests per
1 million people, according to pandemic data released by Worldometer.
|
2. Those interested in applying can simply visit the
university's website and view the catalogue at online-learning.harvard.edu.
Although the classes are free, they require commitment
from the online students. Once you choose a subject, a list of programs will
appear as options, with duration, time commitment, pace and difficulty level
specified. Since the outbreak, many institutions and companies have been
working toward keeping the public educated and productive through free
e-learning initiatives.
|
|
3.Cruise ships are being considered as they have readily
available rooms and en-suite toilets to minimize person-to-person contact,
the city-state's tourism board said in an e-mailed statement on Friday. People
rarely catch infectious diseases twice as they develop some immunity, medical
experts say, though there have been isolated reports of such cases since the
pandemic began in China in December.
